Grey
11/04/07 - 06/08/19
Grey had an exceptional temperament. A real playful clown of a dog, she had excellent dog-dog communication skills and could diffuse difficult situations with subtle body language.
By this point, I was working as a trainer with a lot of reactive dogs - and Grey was my chosen ‘stooge’ dog, for this reason.
However, Grey (sadly) didn’t live up to our expectations in the field. She didn’t range or point well and she was so un-coordinated, physically, it was hard to train her to handle - since she had no concept of her body-in-space.
So she mainly enjoyed herself, beating on local shoots.

Grey was from Nick Elder’s Aucassin kennel, in Ireland.
After Slate, we wanted a dog which had strong hunting and pointing abilities. But we were very reluctant to leave Weims.
We considered importing a pup from the US, where we knew there were some fantastic trialling Weims. But, at the time, dogs had to be around 9 months old before they could be imported to the UK - and we didn’t want to miss the socialisation period.
The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer seemed to offer a solution. It had a lot of Weim blood and essentially looked like a wire-haired Weimaraner.
SRHPs had only recently been developed in their country of origin, so we thought they wouldn’t have had hunting ability bred out of them by breeders catering for the show and pet markets.
