Roche

Roche has a huge amount of natural ability and is exceptionally ‘driven’. She hunts very hard and ranges far on open ground, but she remains in contact with her handler over these distances. She has a beautiful natural point and will hold (if the bird holds) and flush on cue.

Her forté is definitely hunting and pointing. She retrieves to hand reliably with both game and dummies, but is not a ‘retrieverholic’.

The traits Roche has are sorely needed amongst Weims in the UK, since a lot of the hunting ability has been bred out of them. (UK Weims still show a lot of retrieving ability - as our first Weim, Slate, did - but you won’t get to use that much unless your dog can primarily hunt and point!)

Roche’s first couple of years were spent in Jersey, since it took us longer than anticipated to move back to the UK.

Roche is shot over regularly throughout the season and also picks up on local shoots. She was graded ‘Very Good’ at her first Spring Pointing Test and she has just started to run in trials - although this year has been a slight write-off, what with her cutting herself on barbed wire, coming into season and trials being cancelled or not getting runs!

Roche does not have any UK Weimaraners in her pedigree. She was bred by Eleonore Lequime at the Des Brumes Des Bois kennel in Belgium.

During Covid, we took an epic trip to Belgium to collect her at 9wks and then lived in Europe with her until her Pet Passport allowed her to travel with us to the UK at 15wks.

Roche’s dad (West) is 100% US field trial lines (Southpaw). He has many outstanding US field Weims behind him. West was imported from US to Belgium by Roche’s breeder and is now a French (Autumn) field trial champion.

Roche’s mum is from highly successful French/Belgium trialling lines, eventually going back to German dogs.

As a result of this outcross, Roche’s COI is incredibly low at 0.08%. She brings considerable genetic diversity to the UK, combining some of the best US and European working lines.

Spring Pointing Tests

28.2.23 - Junior - Very Good - GLPC at Emblehope (Steve Kimberley & Sue Wagstaff - judges)

J. Laurens’ Weimaraner bitch showed an incredible turn of pace, but after a minute settled well into a good pattern and put up snipe which she had scented. She covered the ground with a good pace and nice head carriage. She pointed a cock pheasant in reeds, was asked to flush and moved forwards quickly to produce the bird that was trying to get away. She was rock steady to flush.
